The Conversational Spanish class visited the fourth grade last month to present a lesson on Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The Studio Art class are using the kiln for an unusual project: Bottle Slumping!
Students are recycling glass bottles and then cleaning them. The bottles are put in the kiln where they will melt at temps up to 1475 degrees. Once they have become molten glass, the kiln starts to cool and the bottles turn back to glass, but they will be flat, in the shape of the bottle that was melted. SPOILER ALERT: Students will decorate the bottles with floral picks, ribbons and paint and give them as holiday gifts. These melted bottles are great conversation pieces and can be used for cheese boards, cookies and wall decorations. See our Facebook page for photos of the process.

PreK made penguins on icebergs; kindergarten made gingerbread cookies; first grade made pinecone snow owls; second grade made gnomes; third grade made tongue depressor snowmen; and the fourth grade made winter mittens and decorated them with glitter glue. If you are in the building for the winter concerts, come take a look at these festive and creative ornaments. Students will be taking their projects home before winter break.
Students in PreK through fourth grade learned how to shade with drawing pencils. Students used a 5H pencil to do light drawing and shading. Next, they used a HB pencil to darken their drawing. Last, they used a 4B pencil to make really dark colors that stand out. They used their fingers to smudge so that their drawings looked smooth; and some used an eraser to make highlights. PreK shaded pumpkins; kindergarten shaded gourds; first grade shaded an oak leaf and acorn; second grade shaded gooseneck gourds; the third grade shaded apples; and the fourth grade shaded Indian corn. They made amazing artworks with drawing pencils.Their drawings will be on display in the hallway for just a little longer, then they will make way for winter tree paintings. See more photos of their work on our Facebook page.
